“The district administration of Jamalpur has begun flood relief operations in Dewanganj upazila following unprecedented monsoon flooding of the Jamuna river.”
The district administration of Jamalpur has launched large-scale flood relief operations in Dewanganj upazila, where rising Jamuna river waters have inundated over 150 villages affecting approximately 5,000 families.
District Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed that relief packages containing rice, dal, cooking oil, and other essentials have been procured from the government emergency fund. The Army and BDRCS volunteers are assisting in distribution via motorboats to reach the most inaccessible areas.
"We are prioritizing households with pregnant women, children under 5, elderly, and disabled persons," said the DC, adding that 12 temporary shelters have been established on elevated ground across the upazila.
The Jamuna river at Bahadurabad point is currently flowing 85 centimeters above the danger level, with BWDB forecasting continued rise for the next 48 hours. Residents in low-lying areas have been urged to move to higher ground or shelter centers immediately.
